The Foglet concept belongs to Warren Ellis and DC Comics. The game terms belong to Palladium Books. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Foglets are a special type of cyborg. They are men and women who have had their consciousness uploaded into a technological mass of metal and circuitry. However, traditional 'borgs inhabit bulky, superhumanly strong bodies capable of great combat feats. Foglets are cyborgs barely as dense as a cough, who can float through the air and hide in clouds. Foglet 'bodies' are masses of nanites, microscopically tiny machines. There are hundreds of different kinds of nanites contained in a Foglet. Some are equipped with tiny anti-grav generators to move the body around, some are tiny microchips which store the consciousness of the host and transmit orders to the rest of the body, and some are tiny factories which replace worn-out or missing nanites. Most of the time, this mass of microscopic machinery looks like a man-sized pink cloud, glowing with electrical discharges and constantly swirling about. Should the Foglet wish, he or she can condense the particles in the cloud to take on a more recognizable form (although the nano-borg can take on new faces or body shapes, there is not enough precision to fool anybody). Another option is to spread the nanites over a wider area, becoming effectively invisible. Furthermore, the advanced nanotechnology in their bodies gives the Foglets considerable power over matter. By carefully manipulating the particles around them, Foglets can turn dirt, air, and water into simple items. Things like electronics or energy weapons are usually too difficult and complex to produce, but Foglets can easily produce items such as fake flowers, simple tools, and cutting or blunt weapons, seemingly out of thin air! Foglets can also try to take the molecules out of living beings, although this is rather difficult. Being one of these extraordinary beings is said to be one of the most amazing experiences in the megaverse. Foglets enjoy unparalleled physical sensations, able to feel every current of air that passes through their bodies. They are known for entering blenders and other such machines just to enjoy the turbulent sensations, and 'have sex' by mingling their clouds (although they cannot reproduce). Foglets don't need to eat (they absorb chemical energy and sunlight from their surroundings), sleep, use the bathroom, or experience any other failings of organic beings, and will live until destroyed. They are immune to projectile weapons, and take 1/4 damage from energy and heat weapons. However, this power comes with a price. Due to the insubstantial nature of their bodies, Foglets are incapable of holding or using physical objects. The anti-grav machines that hold their bodies together are not strong enough to capture anything heavier than dust. There is also the danger of the nanites being scattered too far apart for the nerve microchips to communicate with each other. When out in an open area, a strong wind does 3D6 damage per melee. Vacuums and other such strong disturbances result in instant death! Also, being a living cloud tends to have adverse results on the psyche after a period of time. Every 8 years, a Foglet must make a percentile check equal to their ME x 5. Failure indicates that the individual has picked up a random insanity. Foglet tech is a relatively new technology in the Three Galaxies (only about 20 years old). It was pioneered by a group of t'zee nanotech scientists, who were looking for a way to minimize the resources needed by living beings. The process became very popular amongst the upper echelons of t'zee society, as jaded socialites sought out this new form of sensation. The scientists, realizing what a hit they had on their hands, began selling Foglet conversion to anyone who could pay. At most places, the procedure costs about 2.5 million credits. For the most part, Foglets are just decadent folks looking for a way to opt out of the real world and its constant demands. Being freed from the needs for food, shelter, clothes, physical goods, etc. frees up quite a chunk of their time and money. Many Foglet communes have sprung up, where groups of these nano-borgs spend their immortality playing, amusing themselves, and enjoying their freedom from responsibility. However, there are some Foglets who are determined to make a difference in the Three Galaxies. Due to their unique powers, Foglets make ideal spies. The Transgalactic Empire, the CCW, the Splugorth, Naruni Enterprises, and many other large forces all have Foglet agents on their payrolls. Some Foglets have also become great scientists and philosophers. And of course, many of these beings travel the universe with heroes and wanderers, constantly searching for new experiences and sights. Quite recently, a small band of Foglets managed to save the world of Ellis-III by synthesizing large quantities of an antidote needed against a plague that was ravaging the planet. Alignment: Any, but most (65%) are selfish. Attributes: IQ: 3D6, ME: 2D6+2, MA: 3D6+3, PS: NA, PE: NA, PP: NA, PB: 3D6+6, Spd: 3D6. Size: 5 square feet, but can expand to fill an area as large as 20 square feet or shrink to fill an area the size of a gumball. Weight: About as heavy as a good hard sneeze. SDC: 6D6 Hit Points: PE + 1D6 per level of experience Note: SDC and Hit Points are NOT increased by physical skills! Horror Factor: None PPE: 1D4 Average Life Span: Immortal unless killed. Natural Abilities: 1) Synthesize Items: By using the tiny machines within his or her body, a Foglet can create SDC items out of materials in its surroundings. It takes 1D4 minutes to create an item. This is a skill with a rating of 35% +3% for every additional level of experience. Any Foglet can create simple things like hammers or bottles. A Foglet who is skilled in a particular field can create items used in that field, if he makes two skill checks (one for the synthesize items skill, and one for the other relevant skill). For instane, a Foglet skilled in sewing could make a suit, or a Foglet skilled in electronics could make a flashlight. It is important to remember that Foglets are limited by what's in their surroundings. A Foglet stranded in the middle of a totally arid desert will not be able to make ice water! For this reason, Foglets generally stay around cities and industrial areas, where there's a good variety of matter to use. 2) Invisibility: By spreading his or her atoms over a wide radius, a Foglet can become effectively invisible! While in this state, the Foglet can not move or use any of its other powers. As an added bonus, the spy is impervious to See the Invisible, as he's not mystically invisible, just scattered too far for the normal eye to see! 3) Invulnerabilities: Foglets are immune to projectile weapons, cutting weapons, and collisions. They take only 1/4 damage from energy and heat weapons, and this damage is always in SD form. Magic and phase weapons still do normal damage (although they too can only do SD), and explosions do double damage. 4) No Organic Restraints: As nanotech creatures, Foglets don't need to eat, drink, use the bathroom, or sleep. They still need sunlight and an atmosphere, however, to provide the chemical energy they need to live. 5) Dissolve Matter: By enveloping a piece of matter, a Foglet can begin to break that matter down, corroding it and tossing its pieces off to the winds. This unique attack does 4D6 SD or 2D4 MD, and has an unlimited payload. It can be blocked by force fields. Magic Abilities: None Psionic Abilities: None Combat: 3 dissolving attacks per melee. Foglets can't have any HtH skills, due to their lack of mass. Vulnerabilities: Foglets take 3D6 damage every melee from wind, and take double damage from explosions. Exposure to a vacuum will destroy them, since vacuum scatters their particles too far apart. Available OCCs: Most Foglets (75%) are vagabonds. They can also be rogue scholars, rogue scientists, spies, or city rats. Anyone can get Foglet conversion, but those people in physical occupations (men of arms, pilots, etc.) or mystical occupations (sorcerors, psychics) rarely do so, because most of their skills and powers become useless. Allies: The t'zee like Foglets and get along well with them. Most large governments have Foglet spies working for them. Enemies: None, except for those who resent the carefree, responsibility- shirking existence that many Foglets have taken up. ---Ghoull __________________________________________________________________
